How to Change WordPress Admin Username?

If you try to change username in your WordPress , you will see the notice “Usernames cannot be changed“.
But sometimes times we need to change the WordPress admin username for security reasons.
In this article, I will show you two different methods to change WordPress admin username without any plugin.

You will find plugins to change the username in WordPress admin panel , but we suggest you to go with my manual steps to change WordPress username.
It is very easy and you can change the WordPress admin username by any one of the following methods.

There are 2 ways to change username in WordPress :
1 ) Change Username through WordPress Admin Panel
2 ) Change Username through phpMyAdmin (Using Database)

 

1 ) Change Username through WordPress Admin Panel

This is the easiest way to change your WordPress admin username. Follow the step-by-step guide to change the username in WordPress by creating a new user and removing old user.

  1. Login to the WP admin panel and go to the Users page. Click the Add New button to create a new user.

  2. Create a new user with your desired Username and Administrator role.

  3. Now, logout from the WP admin panel and log in with the newly created user account. Go to the Users section and click the Delete link under the old username.

  4. Select Attribute all content to new user and Confirm Deletion.

2 ) Change Username through phpMyAdmin

By changing Username from phpMyAdmin is bit difficult if you do not have the technical knowledge or do not have access to Database.
Let’s change step by step Username through phpMyAdmin

  1. Log in to the cPanel account where your WordPress site is hosted. Search Databases section and click on phpMyAdmin or Directly you can search for phpMyAdmin. Another way if you do not have cPanel upload phpMyAdmin to your ftp to get access of database.

  2. In phpMyAdmin panel, select the database from the left side menu.

  3. Click on the wp_users table from the list of database tables. (prefix wp_ may be different based on your chosen during your WordPress Installation)

  4. Click on the Edit link of whichever username you would like to change.
